    Wheeler’s Frozen Desserts

Sweet Avenue Bakery graciously invited me over for their pre-Oscar vegan ice cream tasting hosted by Wheeler’s Frozen Desserts. Well worth the 4 mile commute to Rutherford. Emily and Ashley tried to make me guess their special flavors. It was tough and I failed miserably, but I could pick out some key ingredients.

    Sweet Avenue Bake Shop

I tried five different vegan ice creams and sorbets. I had the Peanut Butter, Black Russian (mystery flavor #1), Margarita Sorbet (mystery flavor #2), Chocolate and Chocolate Sorbet.

The best flavor, hands down, was the Peanut Butter. I could taste the peanut butter and the creamy vegan ice cream just made it melt together so nicely. I did not like the Chocolate because it had chunks of coconut, even though they assured me it did not. I liked the others, but my second favorite was the Black Russian.

Good news though, Wheeler’s is opening a storefront, so the next time you are in Boston, head over. It will be opening on Mass Ave near Huntington. Apparently this is a prime location.

Thank you to Dani and Jake and the always-spectacular crew of Sweet Ave and to Wheeler’s for providing the goodies.

Feel free to check out Wheeler’s online. Sweet Ave put up some pictures of the event also. Look closely; you may just see someone that wrote this review

Vegan Ice Cream Tasting in Jersey

    In honor of Groundhog’s Day…

Our friends at Sweet Avenue Bake Shop sent us an email this week with the following information.

Hey guys, you’re going to like this. We’re teaming up with Wheeler’s Black Label Vegan Ice Cream to offer an Oscar Party ice cream tasting to our customers on Saturday, February 23rd. The guys from Wheeler’s are going to be coming by our shop with lots of yummy vegan ice cream in tow for you guys to sample. There will, of course, be the usual cookies and cupcakes to go along with the ice cream, if you so desire.

If you aren’t familiar with them, Wheeler’s Black Label has a ridiculous variety of flavors, kinda like us. We think it’ll be a nice fit. There’s also a bit more info on Wheeler’s blog.

    Happy Thanksgiving / Tofurky Review

For many people Thanksgiving is about turkey and fixings.

If you want to try Tofurky, I’ve posted many reviews in the past. They can be found by clicking the links below or continue to read this for my newest review.

Stay tuned in the future for more reviews to follow including organic soaps, teas, beer and frozen entrees.

Feel free to forward this email out to your friends and family. I’m sure they’d like it.

    Thank You,
Mike & the entire Leafygreen.info staff.

    Now, the Review…

Sunday night, more than a dozen of our friends gathered for our Annual Potluck Thanksgiving Dinner. We ate green beans, mashed potatoes, cranberries, lasagna, salad, organic mac-n-cheese and two tofurkeys.

Everyone’s dishes were great, handmade with love, making them even better. The Tofurky roast takes a long time to cook, usually much longer than the recipe calls for. Not everyone enjoys the starchy consistency of the Tofurky roast, but I like it. It’s very woodsy especially when you cover it with the mushroom gravy.

If you are a vegetarian/vegan and want to feel part of the turkey eating crowd, this will do it for you, but there are other options. We decided this year is the last year for the roast. It’s not that to Tofurky is not good, but it’s not great either. It’s basically just a protein substitute. I don’t want you to think that I don’t like Tofurky products, but I can live without Tofurky on Thanksgiving.

If you are new to vegetarianism/veganism, go for it. Try the Tofurky roast, you may just like it.

Pangea Organics Beyond The Pink Ribbon Event

Last month, I had the pleasure of attending a fundraiser for Pangea’s Beyond The Pink Ribbon (BTPR) Campaign. It was a nice evening in NYC with people who wanted a fun and informative night out.

Mitchell L. Gaynor MD. spoke to the audience about cancer and ways to cure and prevent cancer. He should know, he is an oncologist. Following Dr. Gaynor, Joshua Onysko, the founder of Pangea came back on to talk some more.

I briefly said hello to Josh and I walked around and talked some more. ABC home and carpet is a great location for an event. I want to thank the fantastic people from Pangea for inviting us. Check out the BTPR site for more info.

There were many companies taking part in the event and accepting donations. You can see the full list here.

Here’s a review for Pangea Organics products.

Natural Products Expo East – Saturday in Review

Baltimore is an interesting city. Recently, I found myself there for the second time in a little over a month. Eric and I arrived very early after departing from our pit stop also known as University of Delaware, where my brother is a student.

Before talking about the Natural Foods Expo, I am going to tell you about one of the best pizzas I have ever had. Iron Hill Brewery, in Newark, Delaware is a pretty traditional, yet trendy brewery and restaurant. I sampled the Ironbound Ale, a semi-strong American Pale Ale. It was subtle on the hops and light. I finished that and had the malty goodness of the Oktoberfest. The dry finish compliments the strong full body and bitterness.

Drinking was not the only good part of Iron Hill. The pizza was in fact the best part. I had the Vegetable Ranch Pizza. Every day veggies were topped on the sauceless pizza, with a blend of mozzarella and fontina cheese with ranch seasonings, such as black peppercorns. The pizza was creamy and peppery, and it definitely filled my stomach up!

Eric, had the Iron Hill Meatloaf and he loved it too. You can see the menu right here.

Leaving Delaware on a good note, food-wise, we traveled the hour to Balitmore.

Finally inside Expo East, Eric and I met some of our partners on Leafygreen.info, such as HTnaturals, Amy’s Kitchen, Twist, Simple Shoes, Tom’s of Maine, New Leaf Tea, Sweet Leaf Tea, Seeds of Change, Pangea, and Turtle Mountain.

We finally got to meet Mic from Planet Friendly PR. It was great to meet such a loyal supporter of Leafygreen.info. Mic introduced us to the people from Sunfood Nutrition, Sambazon, Manitoba Harvest and Amazing Grass. It was great to sit down and talk shop with all these great people.

It was also cool to meet new people who we will hopefully be working with in the future such as Road Side Organics and the Veganaise people.

After four trips back and forth to the car with satchels of goodies to take home, Eric and I packed up and left to drive north on I-95. A few hours later, we made it back the North Jersey.

Overall, it was a great experience, we met many great people, had great craft/organic beer with Orlio, had some grass with Amazing Grass, ate salsa with Garde Fresh Gourmet and brushed our teeth with Dr. Nick.

Sweet Leaf Tea @ Expo East

At the end of the show, I even got a boost of energy from Morningstar’s new organic line.

Stay tuned for many many more reviews to come. Thanks to all of our past, present and future supporters of Leafygreen.info. I’ll see some of you at the Cultural Expo in NYC next year.
