Barrier Reef from australian Scent

Barrier Reef soap from australian Scent (aS) comes packaged in what seems to be a recycled cardboard box. The scent smells like the ocean.  The main ingredients are seaweed, green tea & lemon balm but there is much more that makes up this wonderful aroma.  When applied to the skin the soap lathered up and became foamy which is a sign of a good soap.  aS says to store this on their loofahs or free draining racks but without having one of those two I had to use what I had.

In my shower I have a tiled soap rack which does not drain.  Needless to say this soap made quite a messy situation. Although it is a fantastic smelling mess to wake up to, it is quite annoying to clean.  The bar has small pieces of various ingredients that exfoliate the skin as it’s used.  Although it makes me feel clean and smell nice it does dry out the skin a little making need for moisturizer. I would recommend this soap for people who have sensitive skin and want an eco friendly all natural soap.

    My Time to Wake Up

My Time to Wake Up is a simple clothing company with a simple and bold statement. Time To Wake Up. Wake up and try to help the world. The black organic cotton shirt fits nicely but it’s not as soft as other brands I usually wear. The shirts are Anvil Brand Organic Cotton, a very large shirt manufacturer, but maybe in the future My Time to Wake Up will have their own line.

They do have bamboo shirts available now and we’ll be reviewing them shortly. The logo is simple and makes sense. The back neck area sports the IUTU which stands for It’s Up To Us. Another good slogan that I’m proud to wear.

I’ll be reviewing the bamboo shirts in the future, so stay tuned and check My Time To Wake Up!

Not Just a Pretty Face: A Review and Interview

If you are reader of this website, then you are probably committed to living a greener life in a greener world. Perhaps you have made strides in recycling your cans, eating more organic food, or driving less and walking more. But, do you know that the shampoo you are using may contain formaldehyde or that the lipstick you buy contains lead? Do you know that your lotion may contain cancer-causing agents? Yes, the lotion you put on every single day to nourish your skin may, in actuality, be causing your body harm. According to the book, Not Just a Pretty Face: The Ugly Side of The Beauty Industry by Stacy Malkan, this is the sad truth about the personal care products we use. Women are the major consumers of personal products, but men are consumers as well. This issue affects our bodies, our families, as well as our global community.

First, let’s address the issue. Through Malkan’s extensive research, she has written a scientifically based and socially responsible book about the fact that the cosmetic industry is NOT regulated by the FDA and that there are dangerous ingredients in our personal care products. Many major companies claim that using “low levels” of toxic chemicals in beauty products is safe. This is a great concern of mine, and I addressed this question in an interview with Malkan. She states, “Their argument is that hazardous chemicals are safe to use as long as the levels are low. The problem with that logic is that none of us is using just one product at a time, and the low levels of toxic exposure are adding up. My view, and the view of many scientists, is that we need to be concerned about the repeated exposures to the multiple toxicants found in personal care products.” Think about how many products you use on your body a day! This is a scary reality.

not just a pretty face book review

Now you know that there are dangerous chemicals in your products. But what are they and how can you avoid them? According to Malkan, “The best advice is: simpler is better. Choose products with fewer synthetic chemicals, shorter ingredient lists, and avoid synthetic fragrance. I look for marker chemicals. If a product contains fragrance, parabens, sodium laurel/laureth sulfate, PEGs, diazolidinyl urea, petrolatum, or things like that, I don’t buy it because I know the company could be making a higher quality, less-toxic product.” There are also phthalates, lead, formaldehyde, and dioxanes in our products. The problem is also that they are not always listed, but rather cleverly hidden under the term fragrance. This is a term of which to be wary.

Now that you are aware of the names of these chemicals, you can further research them in the book Not Just a Pretty Face. Also, there are two excellent websites that Malkan recommends visiting: The Compact for Safe Cosmetics
and Skin Deep. Go into your bathroom closet, look at the products you use, and research them on these sites. Are they safe enough for your body? Could you buy from a more responsible company? We all want a quick answer to this question, but the truth is we have to be willing to do the work. Malkan does not buy products from: “Avon, Estee Lauder, Revlon, L’Oreal, Proctor & Gamble and the others who are not responding to legitimate concerns about toxic chemicals.” Although Malkan does not want to endorse specific companies, I would put my stamp of approval on Burt’s Bees, Kiss My Face, and all the companies of the products I have reviewed on Leafygreen.info. I now have slowly started to replace many of my personal items with safer alternatives.

Lastly, what can we, as consumers, do about it? At the end of my interview I asked Malkan this question and she replied, “We need to boycott, lobby, write letters, educate our daughters, talk to everyone we know about what we are learning – we need to reclaim our health, our environment and our democracy.” My advice is to first buy this book, next, reevaluate your products, and last, educate others about the “ugly side of the beauty industry.” Horst Rechelbacher, founder and former owner of Aveda, states in the book that, “Cosmetics should be safe enough to eat.” The philosophy behind this statement is the goal Malkan hopes we can one day achieve.

Thank you to Stacy Malkan for her tremendous insights and research on this significant topic!

    Mateveza Yerba Mate Ale

The fusion of Organic Yerba Mate and Cerveza results in a very drinkable pale ale called Mateveza. The naturally caffeinated pale ale is a unique style in the craft beer market. First off, this beer is caffeinated because Yerba Mate provides natural energy from the plant. I’m not sure of the actual brewing process but the beer tastes slightly like Mate but definitely resembles a straight-forward pale ale.

    mateveza review

Mate is normally woodsy and heavy unlike most teas. The mellow hops and citrus flavor counter balance the ale nicely.

Mateveza is a very drinkable Pale Ale so if you’re on the west coast, go ahead and buy some of it in the local stores, if you anywhere else, check out the site for information and a locator.

    Northland Woolens Twice Baked Hat

Northland Woolens has come up with a great product. They are taking sweaters and other fabrics that would typically be disposed of and recycling them into very warm winter accessories like Hats, Mittens, Scarves, etc. They do make other products so be sure to check them out.

We received three products to review from Northland Woolens. Unfortunately as winter was ending I only had a chance to review one so
far. I will review the others this winter.

The Twice Baked Hat we received is blue and red. It has a very thick wool exterior with a fleece lining. This baby kept my head nice and toasty! I had a chance to spend two weeks using this and my head was never cold. According to Northland Woolens website, his hat is made by an Amish woman in their local community. It is good to know it is US born, made and no sweat shops were used.bomberhat2.jpg

I have only two complaints with this hat. Aesthetically the hat had some frays of fabric on top where a ball could typically be. I had to cut this off because it was unattractive. Also, I couldn’t keep this hat in my coat pocket, like I usually do because it was way too thick. It would have been impossible to put anything else inside.

    The Organic Food Guide

The Organic Food Guide is a short book by the Sproutman, also known as Steve Meyerowitz. Meyerowitz simply writes about the technical and legal aspects of being organic. He also discusses green practices such as all natural, biodynamic and free-range. He gives suggestions about being more locally and globally green. All the green buzzwords that are being tossed around are mentioned in this small book. This book is important for you newbies or old green veterans to read.

the organic food guide book review

The book is under 100 pages, but filled with a decent amount of information. If you want to learn something new, this little book will help you learn.

It’s not expensive either, so pick it up online or if you see it in your neighborhoods.
