Sweet Avenue Bake Shop is OPEN!

alt text

Sweet Avenue Bake Shop, owned by the husband and wife combo of Danielle and Jake Vance, opened their doors on Saturday. They are located at 153 Park Avenue in Rutherford right across the street from Female Fitness, Ice Cream Charlies and Chris’ Pizza.

I stopped in this week soon after opening to say hello and see how everything was going. Sweet Avenue Bake Shop sells handmade delectable cupcakes, cookies and muffins and coffee too. They offer vegan and regular varieties. They have soy milk for your coffee and regular milk too.

Baking at the Sweet Avenue Bake Shop

The friendly, inviting decor is covered in pink and brown, reminiscent of cupcakes and icing. Their website has some nice pictures, but you can see my pictures if you’re interested.

Open from 7 in the morning, there’s always time to try the great food and the fun, cozy atmosphere.

These handmade delights are baked right in the store, so it’s always fresh and that reflects in the taste!!!

Sweet Avenue Bake Shop

Danielle was also featured in this month’s VegCooking. I think Sweet Avenue’s off to a great start and I’m looking forward to going in time and time again.

sweetavenuebakeshop.com will take you to the official site. You can find pictures, the menu, contact info and a blog, or call 201-935-BAKE!

    The Star Legder’s Munchmobile Trip

    Munchmobile & I

The tofu’s out of the bag. I can post about my trip on the Munchmobile, finally. The Munchmobile is part of the Star Ledger, the largest circulated newspaper in Jersey, where you drive around in a van with a giant hot dog on top, trying different local restaurants all summer long. Each week, on the trip, there is a new type of place and I was fortunate enough to land a spot on the Vegetarian/Healthy trip.

The article is finally done and in the paper today. If you have the Star Ledger, check it out, if not read about the trip here.

My short review is also posted online, click here for that link. In addition to reading, click here to see some pictures from the beautiful day of munching and the videos are online also, click this.

Finally, I expanded on my original review after the drop, so click the header to read the full post.

The New Jersey Jackals Baseball Food Menu

    Jackals

The New Jersey Jackals, an independent minor league baseball team, located on the Montclair State University campus at Yogi Berra Stadium has a large selection of food to choose from, including Veggie Burgers the size of a softball. They are cheap also and I know Mike loves them. The food is good quality also. It’s not that generic tasting, if you know what I mean. Thursday nights they have $1 beer and soda with some lovely Cricket Hill beers on tap and other staples for you unadventurous type.

    Bhoj Indian Restaurant Review

On Sunday, I treated myself to one of my new favorite types of food. I placed an order to Bhoj in Elmwood Park, NJ. I ordered my staple, Saag Panner, mixed vegetable Pakora, garlic naan and Masala Dosa. I love Saag Paneer, which is spinach and homemade Indian cheese in a creamy sauce. Paneer is sometimes referred to as cottage cheese, but it’s cubed and not gross. The Panner from Bhoj is always good. Not super hot, but not weak either. The cheese is soft and flavorful. I can taste the garlic and the creamyness of the sauce makes for a perfect combo. Pakora is a fried mixture of veggies battered usually in a chick pea flour. I love to eat it with the mint chutney and the sweet chutney. It’s sweet, hot and minty all at once. The garlic naan is always good. I normally get the plain naan, but I decided to go all out this time. Masala Dosa was a new edition for me. It’s unusually amazing. It’s a pancake of sorts filled with potatoes and onions. The pancake is made from rice and lentils. It’s served with a spicy soup and a coconut chutney. I hate coconut, so I did not like the chutney, but the soup was amazing. It had carrots, whole lentils, okra and some veggies that I could not figure out. It was amazing. The sambar or soup was a tomato and lentil soup but with HEAT! The Dosa was a new item to try and I’m glad that I did. It was really good, especially for lunch the next day.

Bhoj is an amazing Indian restaurant. I met the owner, Sunny Chadha. We spoke for a few minutes and he is in the process of offering organic items as well, so keep on eye out for that in the future. Their vegetarian selections outweigh their non-vegetarian selections. I’d suggest going any time of the day, but they do have a really nice lunch buffet.

So rejoice, Bhoj will crave your North Jersey Indian food hunger pains. It’s located on Market Street in Elmwood Park in the shopping center with Dunkin Donuts and Music Connection.

If you’ve never tried Indian food before, go for it. Try something less exciting like Aloo Gobhi, potatoes and cauliflower with herbs and spices. If you like that, you’ll be hooked.

So, check out Bhoj and tell Sunny that Leafygreen sent ya!

PS — The basmati rice pudding puts diner rice pudding to shame. My dad would love it!

    Red Robin Restaurant Feedback

Red Robin is one of my favorite chain restaurants. I say this as a vegetarian. They have two choices of veggie burgers, however, they unfortunately charge extra for them. I have a problem though. Your refill drinks keep coming with straws. That’s so much wasted plastic. I hate straws and I’m not that lazy that I couldn’t take the straw from almost empty glass and place it into full glass. Either way, it’s good food and the endless french fries are great. If you like honey mustard, they have one of the best honey mustards around.
