Gone to Beerfest

In honor of my birthday, we are taking today off and we’ll be back on Monday. The NY Brewfest is tonight (South Street Seaport) and Beer week is all week long in NYC. Go out and try some local and possible organic beers. Local is the new green so support your local economy and brewery.

In other news, what do you guys think of the new format of only posting 3 times a week rather than 5? Leave us some feedback!

Go check out our friends Thing-One on Saturday night in NYC. Cupcakefest performers Thing-One from Jersey are releasing their new record at The Mercury Lounge. Hit them up if you are around!

    Serpentine Vapor Shampoo Bar

This bar is fragrance and color-free for you allergic people out there. Much like the Kahlua bar, Vapor also falls apart easily if not drained well, but it kept me clean for the few weeks I used it.

Not much else to say about this shampoo bar, but Serpentine seems like a cool, DIY company and their website is chock-full of helpful shampoo tips and how-to’s.

australian Scent Ayers Rock Moisturizing Bar

australian Scent’s mission is to provide natural alternatives to personal hygiene products by not using harmful chemicals and other eco-friendly practices in their line of product.

    australian scent bar

I like shampoo and soap bars when they do not get all gooey. I decided to try Ayers Rock. I applied the bar onto my body for a week or so. My skin was soft and clean, but Lala hated the smell. The clove oil was way to powerful. The package states it has cocoa butter, turmeric, honey and paprika and some added scents from orange, nutmeg, lemon and clove. I enjoyed the results of the body bar, but overall, the scent was not my thing and certainly not Lala’s cup of tea either. Apparently her sense of smell won.

Reeds Cherry Ginger Brew and Virgils Cream Soda

Handcrafted, brewed ginger ale is starting to show up on retail store shelves more than it has in the past and it’s for good reason. Health conscious people do not want traditional sugary sodas anymore. They are into healthier alternatives with actual nutritional benefits.

    reeds brews

Reed’s brews are more than just a soda. Like a good craft beer, Reed’s prides itself in handcrafted brews made with ginger. Ginger is known for its medicinal properties and benefits. It is hghly present in the brew.

The Cherry Ginger contains 22 grams of ginger per bottle and contains cherry juice and tastes good. It’s tart and slightly spicy from the ginger. It is very refreshing and worth trying if you are into ginger.

Reed’s also produces Virgil’s Cream Soda sthat my Dad absolutely loved. He said it tasted traditional and blows Brown’s away! I did not get to sip it, but I trust my Dad’s opinion.

    Solay Crystal Salt Lamps

Crystal Salt Lamps are supposedly a natural way to improve the air quality in your space. The negative ions are increased with the heating of the salt from the lamp thus benefiting people who suffer from allergies.

    salt lamp review

I am not sure if the salt lamp is actually helping my allergies. The dim light makes the salt glow with a nice romantic light. However, I cannot confirm nor deny previous stated claims. There are a few different types of salt lamps (Himalayan, Polish and Persian) to choose from.

So if you’re into this type of remedy, check it out and if you run out of salt for your potato recipe, you know where you can get some extras.

    Serpentine Kahlua Shampoo Bar

I love the smell of the Kahlua in the morning. The shampoo bar is dark brown and accented with the aroma of coffee and vanilla. It makes my hair feels soft and smell nice while showering.

    serpentine shampoo bar

The downfall is the shampoo is a bar and much like bars of soap, the shower water causes them to get gooey and melty. The natural brown color from the soap combined with the water in the shower make my shower look dirty too. Keep that in mind when using the Kahlua soap from Serpentine Hair. If the smell is not good enough, maybe the fact that Serpentine is vegan and sulfate-free may peak your interest.

    Couronne Recycled Glass Products

Think about all the vases lying around each year from the flowers you send to your mother, girlfriend or secretary. There is probably tons of glass lying around doing nothing, so why not recycle it or purchase some recycled glass?

Couronne designs glassware, plates, jars and candle holders out of recycled glass. It’s not only eco-fabulous, but it saves the virgin sand, ash and limestone from being mined.

I have a few of these products at home. Two are small containers that are good for storing pencils or pens in a conveient spot in my kitchen. I suppose I could put small flowers in the vase, but the pens work for me. The larger, green vase, is not too flowery looking but hey, it’s a vase, so it is supposed to hold flowers.

It does it’s job well and the green color reminds me of beer bottles. Check them out at Couronne’s website.

    Newman-O’s

Newman’s Own Organics repackaged their line of Newman-O’s in two sizes and added some flavors. Good new for all you O fans. They are delicious! The Ginger O’s were my favorite. They are spicy and creamy, and filled with gingery goodness. Dunking an O in soymilk or hot chocolate makes this treat complete.

The Mint Crème is wonderful as well. It’s got the right balance of mint and chocolate leaving me satisfied with every last bite. The original is no joke either, but pretty plain.

I will be reviewing the Wheat and Dairy Free Newman-O’s very soon so check back shortly, in the meantime, pick up a package of Newman’s organic line of O’s.
