Camping 2008 - Product Reviews

Every year, the crew of Leafygreen.info and friends head out for a weekend in the woods. This year, we decided to bring along a new set of green products for real life testing. We had a good amount of bug sprays and sunscreens as well as lanterns, sporks, plates, silverware and a sleeping bag.

Let’s talk about the sunscreens first. Purple Prairie’s has two products: the Sun Stick and the Sun Stuff. The Sun Stick is a deodorant-stick type sun block. It applies smoothly, yet leaves a white residue unless you rub it in nicely. The Sun Stuff, however, is a non-oily cream. Both of the Purple Prairie products seem to work well. The products do not irritate my skin and actually work well. Just be sure to cover your skin completely as the directions state, otherwise you’ll get a nice red skin burn.

Soleo’s Sunscreen is another cream-based solution. The package I have comes with a handy karabiner for hanging on my backpack. The lotion is very light, but does not seem to work that well. In fact, it left me with a slight burn, unfortunately.

Australiant Scent, commonly known as aS, aside from their personal hygiene line, has a bug spray. We tried the bug spray out in the woods and it was semi-effective. The odor was pleasant, but the spray is very oily. It left my legs and arms slippery to the touch, but the bugs still got to me. I did not receive too many mosquito bites, but then I reapplied the Bugger Off spray and it the mosquitoes seemed to stop their pestering. If I had to choose between last year’s camping trips bug spray of choice, All Terrain Bug Spray, and Bugger Off by aS, I’d go with All Terrain. It seemed to be much better overall.

Like I stated above, we had eco-friendly sporks, silverware and plates. The Sporks were pretty cool. They are made from plastic, a heavy-grade plastic, which allows for easy washing and reusability. The sporks from Light My Fire come in multiple colors and feature a convenient fork spoon and knife combo. One side is a fork with a knife on the edge and the other is a spoon. This are unlike the sporks your grandmother has for her grapefruit for breakfast. The sporks are pretty sturdy and perfect for camping.

Some opted for conventional silverware, well, green-conventional. The silverware is made from starch made from vegetables such as potatoes. The forks, spoons and knives are not only durable but could be a fierce competitor in the disposable silverware marketplace. These will degrade over time just like normal food. Throw them in the garbage or into the compost, it’s going to biodegrade nonetheless.

sporks review

The plates we used were also green. Made from sugar cane, the plates had an unfamiliar texture to them, but worked much like the thick paper or plastic disposable plates work. They held the food in place and did not have any real issue with sogginess. Pretty cool, we all thought. Again, compost or trash them, they are biodegradable.

The last three items were my favorite, however. The sleeping bag, from Sierra Designs, made from recycled polyester, the LED flashlight by Altus Lumen and the two candle-based lanterns from Light My Fire.

sierra design lazer 30 review

The Lazer 30 is lightweight and super warm and is made from plastic bottles and fibers. Some fun and useful features include; the pocket at the foot that lets fresh air in all the time, unless you close it of course; the mummy/hood area and the hanging straps for both drying it out and packing it tightly. I loved using it. In fact, it was super warm at some points and I had to unzip the bag to let more air in.

The LED flashlight charges via USB either with the included power adapter or via your computer. The flashlight battery does not last a long time, roughly and 3 to 6 hours, but it’s worth stuffing it into your pocket. You can use the TRI-L in so many different ways because of the nifty tripod stand it’s built into. Pick your angle and your lights and go for it. If you’re going to be out for a while you may want to consider the solar charger or just the traditional lantern.

The Industrial Revolution came and went, but it seems to be back with the innovations coming from Industrial Revolution. The Candle Lantern and the Candleier are pretty sweet. The glass enclosure keeps the burning candles safe and wind-free while at the same tine letting out a pretty steady flow of light from the fire. It’s not hot too the touch and seems to never go out. In fact, the candles are positioned so they are actually in a holder mounted on a spring so when the candle burns down, it moves up and appears to be a the top of the lantern the entire time.

Oh yeah, we also drank purified water straight from the river with a little help from our SteriPen friends. This quickly sterilized river water and made it safe for consumption. It did not make any of us sick. It’s hard to get used to at first, but follow the directions and you’ll be safe! Awesome for any hiker or camper that is on the go and may not have access to fresh drinking water.

Really cool stuff! So, this review is huge, there are many products, but it’s well worth checking out the products that these green companies offer.

    Greensleeves Garment Care

Blueberries and khaki pants do not match, but Greensleeves Garment Care in Long Island, NY did a mighty fine job cleaning the pants in a green, toxic-free way and left no trace of the blueberry incident. Much like other green cleaners out there, Greensleeves will pick up and deliver your clothes back to you.

Greensleeves offers a truly eco-friendly way of cleaning your valuable threads. They are, like everyone else, blogging. Living the Green Way is Greensleeve’s official blog, so you should check that out.

I said that they removed ther blueberries from my pants, but they also cleaned my favorite argyle sweater. This sweater is light and delicate, so I was nervous, but the cleaners did a great job. No tears and it’s soft as it was when it was brand new!

You’ve got my vote Greensleeves. Too bad my pants just had another incident, this time with chocolate.

    Mediterranean Pinot Grigio Puttanesca Sauce

Today I made some whole wheat penne pasta with Mediterranean Pinot Grigio puttanesca sauce from Vino de milo. They’re an all-natural company from Athens, OH, that uses locally grown vegetables, a practice that I’m a big fan of. Another difference is that all their sauces, and salad dressings, are made with wine. Pinot Grigio, shiraz, merlot and more, are carefully paired with the ingredients, and they end up succeeding in providing a great, and very different, taste.

    Mediterranean Pinot Grigio Dinner

The first thing I noticed, was that I was actually able to point out ingredients in the sauce, like olives and onions. The second was that as opposed to many jarred puttanesca sauces, which are ridiculously spiced, the heat of this one was slight and subtle. The addition of the wine made the sauce absolutely amazing. I realized later that the added spice was provided from the wine, like a good Pinot Grigio would, as opposed to hot pepper flakes.

I liked this sauce quite a bit, and I’m looking forward to trying some of the other flavors. Two thumbs up!

    Flip & Tumble

The following review comes from my mom, Dale. She had a really cute reusable bag but it was stolen hence the review of Flip & Tumble.

I particularly like that the Flip & Tumble 24-7 bag is so easy to roll into a ball. The ball I keep in my purse when shopping and in one easy step it becomes a shopping bag when grocery shopping. The pad on the shoulder strap makes for easy carrying.

    Solay Simple with Himalayan Salt

    Solay Simple Laundry Soap

It is hard to talk about Solay Simple Laundry Soap with Himalayan Salt as It does in fact clean the clothes but does not leave any sort of smell at all. No fresh scent, no dirty scent. I guess you can say it is perfect for people that have bad reactions to colognes, perfumes, or other scents. In a laundry machine it is hard to tell how well it works. It did get out small stains that any other detergent would rid of. It was very soapy in the wash. It did not cause strange stains or any changes in the feel of the fabric. In my opinion it did its job. I just like my clothes smelling fresh.

    Solay Simple Multi-Purpose Cleaner

Solay Simple Multi-Purpose Cleaner with Himalayan Salt was a little different than the laundry soap as you can definitely smell the salt in the mix. On small clean up jobs you only need a little spray but on thicker stains you need to spray a lot and let it sit for a minute. It does clean up the hard stains with help of the natural salt but it leaves a slight ocean/fish smell behind. A few sprays of method deodorizer and the smell gets masked very quickly.

    Reed’s Apple Cider

Reed’s Apple Cideris naturally brewed from fruits, herbs, roots and spices, which are aged like wine. With its sparkling filtered water, apple juice, fresh ginger root, lemon juice and cinnamon you would never know it is non-alcoholic. For Apple Cider fans Reed’s Spiced Apple Cider could give others a run for their money. But even being a big fan of cinnamon this was a little too overwhelming. I could not see myself buying a 6-pack of Reed’s Spiced Apple Cider.

    Square One Organic Vodka

I love vodka as much, if not more, than the next guy. I felt, however, that I wouldn’t be able to provide an accurate, if not coherent review on my own, so I enlisted my buddies John, Chris and Chris to do a group taste test over a friendly Friday night card game of High Low Jack.
I brought the Square One Organic Vodka, and a leading brand of vodka (you absolutely know which one) to John’s house. We decided on three different drinks–vodka & tonic, vodka & blueberry martini mix, and vodka straight up. All drinks were made with the same measurements to provide accuracy. Here are our results:

Drink 1 – Vodka & Blueberry Martini Mix
I thought the blueberry mix was awesome, and the Square One blended well with it. Not too strong, but strong enough to know that I should watch how much of it I drink. The other brand was strong in vodka taste, very “burny”. John thought the Square One blended better, and was smoother and subtle. Subtle is the key, so Square One takes an early 1-0 lead.

    P1010001.JPG
    Drink 2 – Vodka & tonic
I like the other brand in this taste test. I liked the stronger taste in this drink for some reason. John was indifferent, Chris K said there was no doubt that the organic was better, while Chris S said if he had to choose, he’d choose whatever was cheaper. We’ll call this a push, and we’re tied up at 1 to 1.

    Drink 3 – Straight Up
Now was the time to test the mettle of the drinkers. We smelled the vodka, and the Square One had a pleasant, light aroma, while the leading brand was harsh. I tried both, and immediately notified my insurance company that they should activate my life insurance policy. Vodka straight is not a good thing, but Square One made me feel less close to death. The others were in the same ballpark when it came to opinions, so Square One Organic Vodka was declared the winner 2-1.

If you see Square One in the store, buy it. It’s a little more money, but you’ll enjoy the smooth taste.
