Greek Town Gyros

In Rutherford, NJ, there is this really small Greek restaurant called Greek Town. It is on Park Avenue, along with almost everything in Rutherford. They offer the typical quick Greek foods such as falafel, hummus, gyros, and grape leaves.

The falafel is outstanding. It is full of romaine lettuce, fresh, thinly sliced tomatoes, chunks of cucumber, and sweet onions. The three falafels are soft and spiced just right. It’s all held together with a creamy dill sauce wrapped in a grilled pita.

Totally worth trying if you want a quick and inexpensive, semi-healthy lunch. It’s not organic, nor vegan, but it is vegetarian and all natural.

They don’t have a website, but here is a map.

Dinner Time with Amy and Del Monte

    Del Monte Organic Peas

Whole-wheat penne pasta cooked al dente, add Amy’s Roasted Garlic Tomato Sauce top it with Del Monte’s Organic Peas and what do you get? An extremely easy dinner.

Amy’s Roasted Garlic Sauce is full of chunky tomatoes, roasted garlic cloves and lots of spices. This sauce is hearty, chunky, and thick.

Del Monte’s new line of organic, canned vegetables are affordable and soon to be available everywhere Del Monte products are sold. I added a can of peas for some color and nutrition.

    Del Monte Organic Peas

The Del Monte peas tasted like the average pea though they are slightly darker in color. This is probably because they are not bathing in crazy preservatives. The peas tasted fresh and not mushy. They are only slightly more expensive then regular non-organic peas.

Check out older Amy’s reviews here and visit back soon for more Del Monte reviews.

Honest Tea Pomegranate White Tea with Acai

I’m not exaggerating, this is one of the best teas I’ve ever had. The light delicate organic white tea combined with a touch of sweetness from the pomegranate and a hint of acai, this beverage is out of this world. Thankfully there is not much caffeine or sugar but enough to enhance the sweetness of the fruit.

White tea is very delicate and can be overpowered very easily, but Honest Beverages did an outstanding job in researching this tea.

Honest bottles are made of recycled plastic also known as PETE. This antioxidant rich is 100% worth trying out. Let me know what you guys think, buy a bottle, drink it up and leave a comment.

Garden Fresh Gourmet Artichoke Garlic Salsa

    Garden Fresh Salsa

Garden Fresh Gourmet’s Guacamole is well worth trying, but I can’t say the same for the Artichoke Garlic Salsa. I expected to be blown away from the unique combination of ingredients. I was wrong.

The salsa was too liquidy, had minimal chunks of tomatoes with some stringy artichoke and large garlic chunks thrown in the mix. The overpowering garlic tomato mixture disguised the artichokes.

Salsa can be liquidy, but Garden Fresh Gourmet’s salsa seemed more like a tomato sauce rather than a salsa. I was not happy with this salsa, unlike the Jack’s Special Salsa.

I won’t let one liquidy salsa keep me down, however. Garden Fresh Gourmet deserves another chance. Click over to GardenFreshGourmet.com for more information. You can also read more reviews over here at Leafygreen.info.

The Battle of The Kettle Chips

    Kettle Chips Battle People's Choice

The contestants consist of the following flavors:

    Mango Chili
    Wicked Hot Sauce
    Orange Ginger Wasabi
    Jalapeno Salsa Fresca
    Death Valley Chipotle

These five flavors are all completely unique from each other, but only one can be the winner. The battle took place over the course of a week. Each day, Bob (remember him from the Wicked Cranberry review) and I sampled a different flavor.

We both agreed the Mango Chili was by far the best one. The heat from the chili pepper was nicely balanced out from the sweet mango. A touch of salt and these potato chips are spectacular. My second favorite was the Orange Ginger Wasabi. It was mildly citrusy and a touch of wasabi for heat. I could not taste any ginger, but the chips worked well.

Neither Bob, nor I liked the Death Valley Chipotle. They were too smoky and no real distinct flavor to them. The last two flavors, Jalapeno Salsa and the Wicked Hot Sauce were enjoyable, but nothing outstanding.

I’d eat the Mango Chili over and over again and you can too. Check out their website to buy or vote for your favorite flavor. The Party Pack comes with fun stickers too!

    Kettle Chips Green Building

Kettle is going green. Their chips are not organic, but they are all natural. Read more about Kettle’s Green Building.

    Raw Revolution Spiralina & Cashew

This new health food, energy bar company called Raw Revolution is making an attempt to make raw food energy bars. Raw foods are food that is uncooked and usually contain more nutritional benefits than the same
    food – cooked.

Raw Revolution produces a health bar full of cashews and spiralina. This strange combination works well together. I don’t think it tastes particularly amazing, but it’s good enough to eat. It provides energy and satisfied my appetite. The bar has a strange feel to it; it’s almost gummy and tacky. The spiralina & cashew bar also has dates, agave nectar, almond, flax and amaranth.

The organic raw kosher food bar has no cholesterol, lots of protein, high in fiber and iron too.

Raw Revolution is a fairly new company. There website contains tons of information about their gluten free, vegan, wheat, corn, soy, trans-fat, refined sugar and cholesterol free raw food bars.

    Maggie’s Functional Organics’ Sport Socks

    Maggies Organic Socks

Maggie’s started as an organic tortilla company and transitioned to a garment company after planting cotton with the corn crop. Quickly, Maggie’s realized that this was a good idea and began to develop their line of socks, followed by other garments. Maggie’s mission is to produce and provide comfortable, durable, affordable and beautiful articles of apparel and accessories made from materials that restore, sustain and enhance the resources, including human, from which they are made.

The product seems to hold up to their standards. I have tried the Sport Socks, which are available in short and tall. I noticed that the short socks are low enough to cover your ankle, but not too high. The black and grey design is sleek and athletic.

Made from organic cotton, lycra and CoolMax, this athletic sock does a good job of keeping your feet dry and cool. The socks are rather thick and really comfortable. I’ve worn them at work, where I walk approximately 2 miles a day and also have relaxed in them at home.

The thickness and athletic feel from the sock really makes these a nice pair of socks to own.

Check Maggie’s out on the web. You can read more about their history, their commitment to the environment and their people as well as make a purchase or locate a retailer.

    All Amy’s, All Week.

Monday, I had Amy’s Organic Medium Chili. It was hearty, full of vegetable protein, red kidney beans, onions, peppers, jalapenos and more, rounded out this fall dinner. I added a dollop of red hot pepper puree, which was a nice addition. It was quite filling, flavorful, and rich. The spices seemed to be slow cooked which is what makes a good chili. Chili is an art, especially vegetarian chili. Amy has succeeded.

Tuesday was Amy’s Organic Margherita Pizza. Unlike Ellios, this pizza actually cooks in the oven, rather than simply defrosting. The pizza is small, about 8 inches, but is filling. Traditional Margherita pizza is fresh tomatoes, fresh mozzarella along with basil and other spices. Amy uses this same traditional recipe. The pizza cooked thoroughly, but the pizza itself, was rather boring. The crust was my favorite part. It’s thick, not too mushy and doughy, and it toasts up a bit in the oven. The pizza does not need to be cooked on a cookie sheet; in fact, they suggest the opposite (just directly on the oven rack) in order to get the maximum crispiness. If you like frozen pizza, try this healthy alternative.

    Amy E's Bakery

Wednesday, Amy E’s Organic Pecan Praline Biscotti. Amy E, no relation to Amy’s Kitchen, produces and sells biscotti. I tried the Pecan Praline this week. It’s organic and vegetarian. Biscotto is traditionally hard and crunchy and this followed those rules. In fact, it was so crispy that it broke off into perfect bite sized pieces. The pecans and pralines are sweet and crunchy which made it a perfect lunchtime snack. Amy E’s simple packaging is easily disposed of in the proper way.

Thursday I ate Amy’s Organic Chunky Tomato Bisque Soup. The simple recipe consists of organic tomatoes, cream and spices. It’s hearty, warming and filling. The soup is smooth and the chunks of tomatoes make it even better. The only thing missing is the grilled cheese sandwich.

Friday I ate Amy’s New Indian Paneer Tika frozen entrée. Basmati rice, spinach potatoes and paneer (Indian Cottage Cheese) in a mild tomato sauce make up this dish. Five minutes in the microwave and you’re set. The rice is traditional basmati cooked with carrots and spices. The spinach is quite plain and not full of garlic and spice, a common occurrence at Indian restaurants around New Jersey. The potatoes are soft and not too salty. The paneer is cut into cubes and sits inside the mild tomato sauce. The complexity of the flavors of the paneer seems to get lost in this dish. The paneer seemed way too mild. This dish was an average tasting meal.

This week was devoted to Amy. Amy’s Kitchen also has a promotion in conjunction with
