Sweet Avenue Bake Shop is OPEN!

Sweet Avenue Bake Shop, owned by the husband and wife combo of Danielle and Jake Vance, opened their doors on Saturday. They are located at 153 Park Avenue in Rutherford right across the street from Female Fitness, Ice Cream Charlies and Chris’ Pizza.

I stopped in this week soon after opening to say hello and see how everything was going. Sweet Avenue Bake Shop sells handmade delectable cupcakes, cookies and muffins and coffee too. They offer vegan and regular varieties. They have soy milk for your coffee and regular milk too.

The friendly, inviting decor is covered in pink and brown, reminiscent of cupcakes and icing. Their website has some nice pictures, but you can see my pictures if you’re interested.

Open from 7 in the morning, there’s always time to try the great food and the fun, cozy atmosphere.

These handmade delights are baked right in the store, so it’s always fresh and that reflects in the taste!!!

Danielle was also featured in this month’s VegCooking. I think Sweet Avenue’s off to a great start and I’m looking forward to going in time and time again.

    Garden State Wine Grower’s Jersey Fresh Food and Wine Festival 2007 Review

    Last Saturday, we headed down to Pennington to the Garden State Wine Growers Association’s Jersey Fresh Food and Wine Festival 2007. It was a beautifully warm and sunny day at the Hopewell Valley Vineyards and the wine was flowing. We headed in and went right to Alba. I love their wines and so do many Jerseans; their booth was packed! Soon, after indulging in sweet reds and whites, fruit and dessert wines from two more wineries, Lauren and I met John and Megan for more sampling under the southwest Jersey sun.

    We walked around, stopping at every single winery, trying and sampling, learning a few things on the way about wine and grapes. Halfway through the wineries, we stopped to grab some food. There were many choices of food vendors, but not for me. I purchased a grilled veggie sandwich for me and a red pepper, mozz, pesto sandwich for Lauren. John and Meg got organic cheeseburgers. One interesting food vendor was Nomad Pizza. Nomad Pizza is a self contained, all in one, catering truck perfect for pizza parties. Based in Hopewell, the Nomad Truck will come to you, and cook pizzas and other dishes for your party. They source from local and organic farmers as much as possible. They do not use petroleum for cooking, instead, they use wood. Nomad also uses recycled napkins and bioplastic tableware. The best part is the REO Speedwagon! After lunch, Lauren had ice cream from The Bent Spoon, a local artisan ice cream shop and bakery. I was lucky enough to get a sample of the sorbet before it ran out. The Bent Spoon uses organic and local ingredients also.

    The festival also had other great vendors like Eddie Fearon from Grandpa Eddie Sauce, a Jamaican Jerk Sauce from Somerset, Shona from Wicks & Wishes, creator of soy candles and body care products from Sussex County, James from Bistro Blends NJ, from Highstown, distributors of fine balsamic vinegars and olive oils, and Harold, from All Natural, distributors of salad dressings, marinades, hot and BBQ sauces. I also got to meet Nancy, from Edible Jersey, a fairly new New Jersey magazine. Edible Jersey was the media sponsor of the event.

    I can’t wait to try out their products and let you guys know how they are. Look for reviews on some of the great products I picked up at the festival coming soon.

    “Philly Style” Steak Tofurky Deli Slices Review

    Tofurky products are a tradition for vegetarians and vegans. Tofurky tries to make products that taste similar to turkey and other “meats” and sometimes they succeed with the flavors and seasoning. It’s a difficult task to accomplish and it’s not always a winner. Personally, I’m moving further away from meat substitutes because I do not like the taste of meat. I did enjoy the Tofurky “philly style” deli slices, however. It does not taste like meat. Instead, I thought the deli slices tasted like tofu with onions, garlic, and lemon. It works well on a sandwich with soy cheddar cheese and onions and peppers. Add some hot sauce and you’re golden.

    Sweet Leaf Green Tea with Mint & Honey Review

    Sugar or Sugar Free aka Diet, you decide. The Mint & Honey Green Tea is amazing. I love the sweet honey and the minty coolness blended together with the organic cane sugar. There is a hint of citrus too. The sugar free tea is not organic (it contains Splenda), but the Organic Mint & Honey is obviously organic. The tea is loaded with antioxidants and contains 100% of your daily dose of Vitamin C.

    Sweet Leaf Tea’s bottles are glass (recyclable) and they also sell 64 ounce bottles. You can purchase the tea online or from retailers such as Whole Foods.

    I’’m a big fan of this Southern staple. The organic black tea and cane sugar tastes like sweet tea’s supposed taste, but what do I know, I’’m from Jersey. The tea is smooth, thirst quenching, and super sweet. I could drink this tea all day long, but it’s very sugary with 34 grams per bottle. It’s a great pick me up or a even better way of relaxing on those hot summer days.

    Sweet Leaf is found in all Whole Foods Markets and other fine retailers. You can also purchase the tea online.

    I am not a fan of plastic bags. They are a waste, bad for the environment and just silly. Nothing makes me more annoyed than going to the store for one tiny little pack of gum and the cashier asks if I need a bag or automatically puts the gum into the bag. They also practice this at my local Blockbuster for your DVDs and at the thrift Stores. I’ve been bringing small cloth bags to the grocery store for a few years now and I’ve
    noticed the increase in smart shoppers who use reusable bags.

It’s perfect to leave in the car, your purse, jacket pocket or at work. It’s made from rip-stop nylon and is virtually tear-proof.
